Three Doors Down - Citizen Soldier
Three Doors Down's genius is threefold.
1) They wrote a catchy song. The chorus is so rudimentary and predictable that even a Zombie could pick up the tune after one listen. Trust me, that is something special. Decaying vocal chords make it really hard to even hum, but Three Doors certainly circumvented that challenge and picked up a new demographic!
2) Most teenage men can relate to the lyrics. Certainly anyone who is listening to Three Doors Down isn't looking to pick up hidden meanings in the songs, metaphors, intellectual musings, or really anything for that matter. As shown in example one, a listener doesn't need a brain to enjoy this. HOWEVER!, those with brains hear the words "Citizen, Soldier" and their ears perk. They think to themselves, "I am a Citizen! I Desire to Be A Soldier! I can relate to this, I'm not alone after all." Yet, they are alone. Always
3) Gross Military Funding! Their video shows young "Citizen Soldiers" AKA "White Nameless Americans" running through generations of America's crusades for freedom,justice, and the right to own a 64 inch plasma TV while millions starve to death each day. These soldiers run amid hails of gunfire and while their enemies parish, they remain unscathed.
I just think it is all genius. I mean, how else are you going to try to subversively recruit people by showing them severely distorted images of war? Answer: A Catchy Rock Anthem!
Three Doors Down, I salute you.

This entry would have been a lot more topical about a year-and-a-half ago, but any opportunity to bash Three Doors Down is fine by me.
Did Christian (or I) ever tell you that Three Doors Down teamed up with the National Guard for a cross-promotional venture revolving around "Citizen Solider"? For a limited time, one could get a free download of this catchy little number by actually JOINING THE NATIONAL GUARD! Isn't that amazing? Would that honestly be a dilemma to anyone with an IQ above 12? Would anyone seriously like this song so much that they'd feel as if devoting their life to the armed forces was a perfectly justifiable exchange for owning the song? I don't think I love anything that much.
It's just a song! And a horrendous one at that. If such a person existed, I would offer an alternative: I would personally give him/her one dollar and they could then buy the song on iTunes and forego putting their life in danger.
It's win-win, really.

i like how starbucks does it...get a coffee and you get a free song on itunes...typically the songs suck but at least you are only getting a coffee.
i just hope that when "it's hard out here for a pimp" becomes available for free that I don't sign up to become a pimp...but rather I could a wise decision and just purchase it on itunes.

Actually Johnny. It still is topical because Three Doors Down came out with a new album today and that is the hit track off that album. So that is why I did it.
